Hillesvåg Yarns at Calico & Ivy
On my recent trip to Norway, I had the chance to visit Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk, just outside Bergen.
Hillesvåg is a family-run Norwegian wool mill that has been spinning yarn since 1898. Yarn is produced from Norwegian wool on several machines still in operation after more than 100 years thanks to great care and daily use. Local hands are involved every step of the way - every hank is still hand-tied after winding, then hand-twisted after dyeing and drying.
There was something so very lovely about seeing that combination of history, skill and good-quality Norwegian wool all happening under one roof. I definitely recommend a tour if you are travelling in the area - you can book on their website!

about the yarn
Hillesvåg uses almost entirely Norwegian wool, which has a lovely combination of strength, spring and softness. The yarns have plenty of character, beautiful colours and that slightly rustic, woolly quality we’re so drawn to.
These are the 3 yarns I decided to stock on my visit (although I would like more in the future!) -
SOL uses the finest fibres from Norwegian White Sheep. It's equivalent to a DK and lovely for everyday garments, colour-work and accessories.
TINDE another DK, uses Norwegian Pelsau wool, which has long, lustrous fibres and a naturally grey/black mix that gives the yarn a lovely depth and subtle halo. Pelt wool has a lot of character - I love the melange effect, so this might be my favourite!
TROLL is chunky but lightweight. Warm, sturdy and wonderfully woolly, it’s perfect for cosy sweaters, cardigans, hats and other chunky projects. The colours are gorgeous.
I came home from my visit very excited about these yarns, and we have all been waiting SO patiently for them to arrive! You will have to try some for yourself, I'm sure you will love it just as much as I do. Explore the range below.
