NEW in store now - Isager Yarn, Eva’s Sunday Clothing, Kaffe Fassett & Ruby Star Fabric
This workshop is designed to inspire and empower participants to mend their existing wardrobe. Mending is an act of love and Tobi Beckley of @i.have.a.stitch wants to pass on these age old skills so we can make our treasured pieces last for generations (and keep them out of the bin). Basket darning is a versatile and effective mending technique that provides many different ways to experiment with colour, texture and shape. It is a joyful launch pad for those wanting to try visible mending for the first time.
First hour or so will consist of:
● Introduction to basket darning technique, materials and tools required for it and what sort of repairs it is most useful for (and least useful for).
● Demonstration by Tobi on a knitted swatch
● Students will practice darning on swatch of knitwear from their kit.
Second hour Tobi will show how versatile this type of darning is as a visible mend talking through a few of her examples. She will also demonstrate how students can use this technique on woven fabrics to mend items like shirts and jeans. Students can continue to experiment with their knitted swatch, practice on their denim swatch or apply this technique to their garments.
DETAILS
Workshop is a two hour class facilitated by Tobi on October 19th. The class starts at 2pm. Numbers are capped at 8 participants.
The workshop will provide you with the information and techniques, and some practice to mend woven and knitted fabric with basket darning. As the workshop is a 2 hour session, you may not get to complete a full repair during the class time, but will have the skills, knowledge and materials to complete the project at home. Tobi will provide suggestions for additional resources that you might want to use to expand or enhance your mending practice.
Repair kit will include:
● 1 swatch denim or heavy to mid weight linen
● 1 swatch of wool knit
● Darning egg
● Three different hand sewing needles, types and sizes incl tapestry, embroidery and long darners
● Selection of cotton and wool thread/ yarn to use for mending
Students to supply:
● A woollen or cotton garment that has a few holes in it, think medium weight knitted jumper or a pair of jeans (please freeze garments for 48 hours or gently hand wash before workshop to prevent moths entering shop)
● Small sewing scissors - can purchase affordable ones from Calico and Ivy before workshop.
● Notebook and pen
Tobi runs a regular stitching group on alternate Tuesday afternoons (2-4pm) which you are very welcome to attend if you want to learn more and connect regularly with other stitchers. Classes are run on a casual basis and are $25, on a pay as you go arrangement. These classes are less formal, numbers are not capped, and you need to have some basic stitching skills to attend.
